The\u00a0National Observatory of Athens (NOA)<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0recently co-organized and participated in a workshop held under the auspices of the\u00a0Municipality of Petroupoli<\/strong><\/a>, focusing on\u00a0Environmental Protection and Citizens\u2019 Health<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The event brought together around 70 participants, reflecting the strong interest of the local community in\u00a0air quality and environmental health<\/strong>. The workshop opened with remarks by\u00a0Dr. Evangelos Gerasopoulos<\/strong>, Director of IERSD\/NOA, while\u00a0Prof. Nikolaos Mihalopoulos<\/strong>\u00a0presented results from continuous spatial monitoring of air pollution and greenhouse gases across Petroupoli. Contributions were also made by\u00a0Prof. Evangelia Samoli (NKUA Medical School)<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Prof. Panayiotis Trigas (Agricultural University of Athens)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The discussion addressed the current state of air quality in Petroupoli, the potential influence of the\u00a0Fyli landfill<\/strong>\u00a0on local atmospheric conditions, and approaches for the long-term monitoring and management of air pollution in the area.<\/p>\n

The results presented were produced through the project\u00a0\u201cCharacterization study of air pollution spatial variation in Petroupoli\u201d<\/strong>, funded by the\u00a0Association for the Development of West Athens (ASDA)<\/strong>, with\u00a0Dr. Georgios Grivas<\/strong>\u00a0as Principal Investigator.<\/p>\n

The initiative highlights the importance of combining\u00a0scientific monitoring, local knowledge and collaboration with public authorities<\/strong>\u00a0to better understand environmental conditions and support informed action for the protection of citizens and the urban environment.<\/p>\n
